If it is well known that water was essential for the appearance of life on earth, it is just as essential for its maintenance – in good conditions. To put it another way: the ocean, which forms 71% of the planet's surface and contains 97% of the water on Earth, constitutes a decisive environmental issue. From climate to housing, from food to transport, it plays a central role in many of the fundamental challenges that the planet will face over the coming decades.

Si c’est bien connu que l’eau a été indispensable à l’apparition de la vie sur terre, elle l’est tout autant à son maintien – dans de bonnes conditions. Pour le dire autrement : l’océan, qui forme 71 % de la surface de la planète et contient 97 % de l’eau présente sur la Terre, constitue un enjeu environnemental décisif. Du climat à l’habitat, de l’alimentation au transport, il joue un rôle central dans nombre de défis fondamentaux que devra relever la planète au cours des prochaines décennies.
